From her humble beginning, she finished her eighth grade at Little Flower School in Bethesda and later dropped out from Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart to take her diploma in 2015. While swimming in High School, Ledecky set the national high school record twice in the 200-yard freestyle and the American and US Open record in the 500-yard freestyle.

She swam under the guidance of Yuri Sugiyama at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club, formerly known as the Curl Burke Swim Club in the summer of 2012. Suguiyama trained under coach Bruce Gemmell of the Nation’s Capital Swim Club until the 2016 Olympics after leaving to become a coach at the University of California, Berkeley. 

She swam for the Palisades Swim Team in Cabin John, Maryland, during the summers before 2012. Ledecky began swimming for Stanford University’s women’s swim team after rupturing an athletic scholarship offer with coach Greg Meehan. Both Ledecky and an Olympic gold medalist, gymnast Simone Biles, became sponsors of the US Navy’s aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in December 2016.
